Alscot's Alternative to Chelsea
To our visitor’s delight, whether a botanist, horticulturist or those that simply have a genuine interest in beautiful gardens, the newly established Ziggy garden and recently planted parkland, both featured this year in our popular annual event; Alscot's Alternative to Chelsea.
Held over two days on 12th & 13th June, it was damp but the grounds and gardens looked stunning and were very well received by the 180 visitors.
Ziggy, constructed in early 2018 was planted up in June last year and it was amazing to see the transformation within just 12 months.
48 new trees, including several Elm trees, were planted between December 18 and Jan 19, as part of Alscot’s Parkland Restoration Scheme. In addition to these new trees, there are some magnificent old trees (approx. 450 years old) within the grounds, in particular cedar, venerable tulip, which to everyone’s joy was in full bloom, and an ancient sweet chestnut.
The various beds including the fragrant Lavender Garden displayed a full riot of colour and there were some new wild flower areas that included bright blue cornflowers, deep red poppies and white daisies - a real spectacle and hive of activity for pollenating insects.
Amongst the interesting herbaceous borders and within the grounds are some wonderful sculptures, including a spectacular water fountain and mill stones, salvaged from a derelict property on the estate.
Throughout the visit guests had the opportunity to meet and talk to the garden team that are responsible for developing and maintaining the gardens on a daily basis.
Later guests made their way to The Bell, Alderminster; a popular award winning country pub and restaurant, owned and run by the Estate, for a two course lunch.
